Beauty Talk with My Best Friend | Face Oils

Sunday, July 06, 2014

Take a moment to have a good long look at this picture of my gorgeous friend Pat. Doesn't her skin look so fresh and revitalised? Not an ounce of makeup on, mind you. Having been friends for close to 3 years, I have found that one of her beauty secrets for near-perfect skin is face oil.

I know, I know, some of us may be thinking 'Put oil on my already oily skin? Aw hell no!' or 'Do I really need to spend $80 on a 50ml bottle of oil?' or 'I have never tried face oils before, what works best for my skin?' Well, that's what Pat's here to answer all your questions about face oils!

So what exactly are face oils and what do they do?
They are basically natural oils that promise more healthier, plumper, more hydrated skin.

Are they the same as a moisturizer or serum?
No, they aren't. They do similar things but nothing can replace your daily moisturiser! A face oil is just for added benefits. I guess you could interchange it with serums, but not moisturiser.

When should you apply face oils?
Before makeup and before sleep at night, under your moisturiser. Make sure that the one you use in the day absorbs well into the skin or it might make your makeup move and slide around, especially in the summer!

Do you think they're a good investment? / Is there an improvement big enough to justify the whopping prices face oils can come up to?
I think they are because they cost the same as most moisturisers, and they last forever! All you need is like, 1 or 2 drops.

Can people with oily or blemish-prone skin use face oils?
Yes of course! In fact, face oils, especially argan oil, can calm redness and minimise inflammation!

What are some of your favourite face oils?
I've used and liked the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate and am currently using the Boscia Tsubaki Beauty Oil

And how do those two compare?
My face feels much more moisturised with the Kiehl's one and it only takes 1 drop, as opposed to Boscia (I need 2-3 drops), but it [Kiehl's] can make my face a little more shiny so I can't wear it in the day. I apply it before I sleep every night.

What face oils would you recommend?
The Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil (find a store) is a great all-rounder and suits most skin types!

For reference, Patricia's skin is:
Dry to combination
Prone to pimples (but not acne)

Have you tried face oils? What do you think of them?

  1. I like the idea of this post :)
I'm obsessed with face oils. They can be really pricey though which is a shame.
I'm in need of a new one actually. Any recommendations?

  2. I don't personally use face oils but my friend Pat says the Clarins Blue Orchid one and the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery works for most people! Or you could give the Tarte Maracuja oil a whirl! x
